Tips is intended to be a place where we can share good ideas
when we hear them. If you have a good idea you would like to share - e mail it to us to sheila@destinyarabians.com
and we will post it here for all to see. (Include your name and
we'll even give you credit for the idea.)
Tip 1
For an inexpensive foal monitoring system try placing a
human Nursery Monitor in the stall. You can hear everything - breathing, munching, groans
and the sounds of labor - water breaking and grunts. Nursery Monitor systems can be
purchased for less than $50 in most areas - and check out a "used goods" baby
store - you can find them even cheaper there.
Kim Johnson of Belesemo Arabians shared this
suggestion for a foal monitor. Check out the local pawn shop and pick up an out of date
video camera. For the cost of camera and cabling you can also watch the proceedings on
your television.
Tip 2
Is Mom ready for a new washer and dryer?
Before you let the appliance delivery people haul off the old set, consider moving them
out to the barn/tackroom to be used strickly for "horse stuff". A cheap set can
also be found at yard or estate sales if you're not ready to replace your current set.
Tip 3
For an endless supply of buckets, check out
the local fast food joints. They get pickles, mayonaise and other supplies in 5 gallon
buckets that become waste products that can be picked up for as little as a dollar each.
Tip
4
For another endless supply of buckets,
purchase your dishwasher soap and laundry detergent in plastic
buckets.
Tip 5
Don't spend your money on a fancy mane or
tail comb - use a regular "vented" human hairbrush. Works great and easy to
find. Check the local "Dollar Store" for finds.
Tip 6
When bandaging an injured horse, use women's
panty liners for the medicine pad. This keeps the wrap from getting messed up, they are
sanitary & inexpensive.
